Forced to evacuate at the expiration of a lease, the Quorum Court
unanimously voted to contract a new maintenance shop on county-owned
property.
The 7,000 square foot structure is
located on a fenced one acre site on Fairground Road, approximately 3 miles
south of Ash Flat on Highway 167. The facility opened in February
2005,
Three drive-through service bays with 14' x 10' doors and two service bays
with 12' x 10' doors for small equipment have air service and electrical
lines on the walls and ceilings. One of the smaller bays has a truck lift.
Two offices, a tire storage room and overhead storage spaces comprise the
rest of the building. There is an outside wash rack.
To track all facets of the department's operations, the Judge's staff
collaborated with the Road Department Superintendent to develop a
computerized reporting system for all the department's functions. Monthly
reports, furnished to the Quorum court and the media, record work sites,
equipment, labor, material and fuel used, along with equipment repair and
maintenance costs. The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management, the
Federal emergency Management Authority, and the Arkansas Association of
Counties lauded the department for completeness and accuracy of its reports.
To facilitate citizen telephone requests for needed road maintenance, the
Judge's office generates a report and faxes it to the Road Department
office. Once the work request is completed, the report returns to the
Judge's office for data entry to track all citizen calls for service.
